ANNUAL TREE PLANTING CEREMONY |

Introduction
The tree planting ceremony is an annual event held in UPM main campus in Serdang, Selangor and UPM branch campus in Bintulu, Sarawak. The main objective of this activity is to create awareness among the general public the importance of forest to the environment and to our survival. The participants comprise of the general public, students from primary and secondary schools and also university staff and students. Participants from Mitsubishi Corporation Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur are also present.
The first planting ceremony was held in UPM campus Bintulu, Sarawak at a 47.5 ha site in 1991. As of 2010, a total of over 350,000 seedlings were planted representing 128 species native to Sarawak. 100 research plots were established in the rehabilitated area. The project initiated in Bintulu, Sarawak is an excellent example of a highly successful forest rehabilitation project on degraded area. The 2nd phase of the project was launched on November, 26 2008 covering a total area of 27 ha in the Arboretum UPM main campus in Serdang, Selangor. To date, a total of 13,500 seedlings representing 136 species indigenous to Peninsular Malaysia were planted at the site.
