Prof. Dr. Akira Miyawaki

 

Obtained Doctorate of Science from Hiroshima University, Japan, specializing in vegetation science.

He served as Professor and Director of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, Yokohama National University, and is currently Professor emeritus at the University. He is also Director of IGES-Japanese Center for International Studies in Ecology.

He contributed to the society serving as Vice President of IAVS (1980-2003), Vice President of INTECOL (1987-1990), President of INTECOL (1996-1999), and advisor tot some organizations of central and local governments of Japan.

He has been planting indigenous trees to form quasi-natural forests for more than forty years.

He was awarded honorary doctorates from several foreign universities including UPM, and also many prizes including Purple Ribbon Medal (from Japanese government), Reinhold Tüxen Prize, Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Star (from Japanese government), and Blue Planet Prize.

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Nik Muhamad Majid

 

Ph.D, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada specializing in Soil Science and Tree Nutrition.

Has served as Dean Faculty of Forestry, Dean Faculty of Agriculture and Food Science, and Managing Director of University Business Center, UPM.

Has been awarded a number of international and national research grants (US National Academy of Sciences, IDRC, Canada, European Union, Mitsubishi Corp., FFPRI Japan, CIFOR, Esso Malaysia, Petronas, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia).

He is currently Chairman of Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) on Natural Resource and Heritage, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, and is also a member of Scientific Advisory Committee, Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET) based in Niigata, Japan.

In recognition for his contribution to the country, he was conferred with the honorific ‘Dato’ title in 2000 by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Kelantan.
